Ammonia Leak in Los Banos - Residents Told to Shelter

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Residents in Los Banos are being asked to shelter in place as crews respond to an ammonia leak in the city on Monday morning.

According to the police department, the Los Banos PD and fire departments are actively working to fix a chemical leak at around 5:30 a.m. in the area of the 300 block of Johnson Road.

The business where the leak came from has been evacuated.

In an update later in the day, officials confirmed that the chemical leak has been confirmed as ammonia. They add that the smell many residents are noticing is not life-threatening

One school in the area was shut down for the day and the second instituted a “shelter in place” order for students and staff.

Officials say road closures remain in place and are asking residents to please avoid the area.
